St Andrew's Triumph

St Andrew's are court aces after they retained the Pengillys Cup.

With St Andrew's and Radipole Primary both looking to win for a fifth time, they doubled their chances by each taking along two teams to the Wey Valley Tennis Centre for the eleventh year of the event.

They were faced with stiff competition from first-timers Bridport Primary as well as teams from St Nicholas, St John's and Southill.

This annual competition, sponsored by Pengillys Solicitors, for school Years Three and below is played on mini courts and includes both singles and doubles matches as well as agility skills, beat the coach and a tennis quiz.

Newcomers to the game compete alongside those with more experience to gain points for their school team.

After some close fought matches in the round-robin boxes, the semi-final line-up was Bridport Primary versus St Nicholas and St Andrew's taking on Radipole.

Bridport and St Andrew's came through to what was always going to be a close final.

It was 1-1 after the doubles, then 2-2 after the top singles before St Andrew's claimed the last two games to run out 4-2 winners and take the Pengillys Cup.

Other prizes went to Ben Buckland from St John's for his efforts on the agility circuit and to Arthur Holmes from St Andrew's who impressed the coaches with his determination.

John Walkington of Pengillys was on hand to watch the action and present prizes and certificates to all players.

Junior coordinator, Chris Penny, was pleased with the day's tennis and very grateful for the support from Weymouth Tennis Club's coaches, parents and older juniors who helped out on court.

She said: "We would like to thank Pengillys Solicitors for their ongoing sponsorship which enables the competition to take place and for coming along to present the prizes."

"It was great to see all the children having fun on the tennis court, learning new skills and competing as a team."

"I think they were quite tired at the end after four hours of non-stop activity."

Weymouth Tennis Club prides itself on providing both friendly and competitive tennis at Radipole Park Drive and Wey Valley Indoor Tennis Centre and welcomes new members from ages five and upwards.
