Stephen qualified as a solicitor in 1986 and returned to his home town to work. Stephen specializes in property work including conveyancing, landlord and tenant and business sales and purchases. He also has expertise in wills, probate, tax planning and helping elderly clients including clients who have lost the mental capacity to manage their affairs. Formerly a partner with Wickham & Lloyd-Edwards, Stephen is one of only a few solicitors on the Court of Protection panel of approved receivers.

In 2000, Stephen was appointed by the Law Society to be an external examiner for the Solicitors' Final examination, a position he held for five years. 

Stephen acts as a trustee on many private and charitable trusts.
